Tech on Wheels
Aims to bridge the digital divide by providing underserved communities with access to technological education and resources
Objective
The Tech on Wheels (TOW) initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing underserved communities with access to technological education and resources through mobile units equipped with computers, internet access, and educational software. The goal is to empower students with digital literacy, soft skills, and technical knowledge, enabling them to pursue higher education and better career opportunities.
Background
The TOW program was launched in 2015 to help night school students overcome challenges in accessing technology due to space constraints, lack of infrastructure, and limited exposure to digital tools. Initially, one bus was introduced in Mumbai to provide computer education to night school students. As the program became successful, Masoom expanded it by adding more buses and extending the service to day schools in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
Strategy
- The TOW buses bring technological education right to the students' doorsteps, overcoming barriers of access, geography, and time. This is a crucial part of Masoom's mission to promote educational equity.
- Each TOW bus is designed to accommodate 28 students at a time and offers flexible learning sessions on various topics such as basic computer skills, web design, graphic design, and financial literacy. These buses operate in both urban and rural areas, visiting schools to ensure that marginalized students have access to digital literacy education. Each bus is fully equipped with modern tools such as CCTV cameras, generators, and air conditioning. The TOW Program includes courses on Basic Computer Skills, Digital Literacy, Web Design, Graphic Design, and Mobile Application Development.
Impact of TOW
Through 4 TOW buses and 1 mini bus, equipped with computer labs, students in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur have gained hands-on access to digital education, bridging gaps in technological infrastructure.
Digital Learning Reach
Over 7000 students have been impacted through 150+ batches, empowering them with essential computer skills and digital literacy.
High Participation
Achieved a remarkable 71% average attendance rate, reflecting strong student engagement with this innovative learning model.
