Evening Learning Centers
Aims to provide out-of-school students, dropouts, and SSC-failed individuals (aged 14+) with a platform to complete their Grade 10 and 12 education.
Objective

The Evening Learning Center (ELC) program was launched in 2020 with the goal of providing an opportunity for out-of-school students, dropouts, and individuals who failed their Grade 10 exams (aged 14 and above) to complete their education in regions where night schools are not available. The program helps these students prepare for their Grade 10 exams, opening pathways to better job opportunities and further education.

Background

There is a growing number of out-of-school students in India, particularly in areas that lack night schools or flexible education options. According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, more than 32 million children aged 6 to 17 are not attending school, often due to financial constraints or outdated teaching methods. Without access to quality education, these students are limited in their job opportunities and could be forced into early marriages for girls and low-paying jobs for boys. The ELC program was launched to bridge this gap.
The ELC program intends to support the NEP’s goal of achieving a 100% gross enrollment ratio from preschool to secondary school by 2030. This will lay an academic foundation that leads to improved career prospects and higher standards of living for students.
Strategy

Impact of ELC
Masoom is currently running 29 ELCs in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand with a total student enrollment of around 6,500 students
Served over 6500 students across 29 centers, providing flexible learning opportunities for working individuals and those with household responsibilities.
Consistent Attendance
Achieved an average attendance rate of 79%, indicating a strong commitment from students despite their challenging circumstances.
Improved SSC Pass Rates
The pass percentage for SSC exams has risen from 36% in 2020–21 to 74% in 2024–25.
Nearly 37% of our ELCs have achieved a passing percentage of over 80% in the SSC exams, reflecting the growing academic success of our students.
ELCs go beyond academics by conducting sessions on environmental awareness, financial literacy, child rights, and more, thereby nurturing students to become informed and responsible citizens.
ELCs are reaching students in remote and underserved regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand—places where formal education systems or night schools for dropouts are often absent.
Advocacy Impact of ELC
Established MoUs to set up ELCs in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand, enhancing opportunities for learners across these states.
Our Reach
Innovating for Inclusion: Masoom’s New ELC Pathways.
We have expanded the ELC model to include three unique centers as part of our aim to provide inclusive education.
- ELC for the LGBTQIA+ Community: This center is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for individuals of the LGBTQIA+ Community in Mumbai to complete their Grade 10 education as private candidates. Members of this community face exclusion from formal schooling due to societal stigma. Through partnerships with local NGOs and communities, Masoom has established a supportive environment that addresses the unique challenges transgender individuals encounter, such as unemployment, limited social acceptance, and lack of documentation. This ELC empowers participants by promoting self-independence and enhancing their rights within society.
- Hybrid ELC: Masoom’s Hybrid ELC was created to support students, especially women, who are unable to attend regular classes due to work or household responsibilities. This innovative blended learning model combines online academic sessions with in-person components, such as science practicals and enrichment activities. First piloted in Pune, the Hybrid ELC offers a flexible, learner-centric approach that allows students to pursue their Grade 10 SSC qualifications while accommodating their personal and professional commitments. By bridging the gap between accessibility and quality education, the program is helping more learners stay connected to their academic goals, on their terms.
- Grade 12 ELCs: The Grade 12 Evening Learning Center (ELC) program was launched in direct response to the aspirations of Grade 10 graduates who wished to continue their education. Currently offered in Pune and Mumbai, the program provides Arts and Commerce streams, thoughtfully tailored to meet the diverse needs of working students. Designed with a strong focus on inclusivity and flexibility, the Grade 12 ELC supports learners who are juggling academics alongside work and financial responsibilities. The program not only opens doors to higher education but also strengthens employability and self-reliance, equipping students with the skills and confidence to shape their futures. With a remarkable 93% success rate among Grade 12 exam takers, this initiative reflects Masoom’s commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

Many educational institutions focus on teaching academically strong students to enhance their image, often neglecting those who struggle, face economic hardships, or are disconnected from mainstream education. Masoom is a blessing for such students, helping them achieve their dreams and integrate into mainstream education.
