Aims to provide out-of-school students, dropouts, and SSC-failed individuals (aged 14+) with a platform to complete their Grade 10 and 12 education.

Objective

line 1

The Evening Learning Center (ELC) program was launched in 2020 with the goal of providing an opportunity for out-of-school students, dropouts, and individuals who failed their Grade 10 exams (aged 14 and above) to complete their education in regions where night schools are not available. The program helps these students prepare for their Grade 10 exams, opening pathways to better job opportunities and further education.

Background

line 1

There is a growing number of out-of-school students in India, particularly in areas that lack night schools or flexible education options. According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, more than 32 million children aged 6 to 17 are not attending school, often due to financial constraints or outdated teaching methods. Without access to quality education, these students are limited in their job opportunities and could be forced into early marriages for girls and low-paying jobs for boys. The ELC program was launched to bridge this gap.

The ELC program intends to support the NEP’s goal of achieving a 100% gross enrollment ratio from preschool to secondary school by 2030. This will lay an academic foundation that leads to improved career prospects and higher standards of living for students.

Strategy

line 1
The ELC model is designed to create meaningful and effective educational opportunities for students by leveraging strategic partnerships with the government and local communities. Students are provided with the necessary support to successfully pass the Grade 10 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or Open School exams. This is achieved through a collaborative 3-way partnership involving the partner organization, Masoom, and the state governments. Together, these stakeholders work towards driving enrollments, establishing and maintaining essential infrastructure, providing teaching resources, and closely monitoring educational outcomes to ensure the success of the students.

Impact of ELC

Masoom is currently running 29 ELCs in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand with a total student enrollment of around 6,500 students

Increased Access to Education

Served over 6500 students across 29 centers, providing flexible learning opportunities for working individuals and those with household responsibilities.

Consistent Attendance

Achieved an average attendance rate of 79%, indicating a strong commitment from students despite their challenging circumstances.

Improved SSC Pass Rates

The pass percentage for SSC exams has risen from 36% in 2020–21 to 74% in 2024–25.

High Achievement Rates

Nearly 37% of our ELCs have achieved a passing percentage of over 80% in the SSC exams, reflecting the growing academic success of our students.

Holistic Development of Responsible Citizens

ELCs go beyond academics by conducting sessions on environmental awareness, financial literacy, child rights, and more, thereby nurturing students to become informed and responsible citizens.

Expanding Educational Access in Underserved Areas

ELCs are reaching students in remote and underserved regions of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand—places where formal education systems or night schools for dropouts are often absent.
