Empowering Transgender Individuals Through Educational Inclusivity: Masoom’s Evening Learning Centers

Masoom launched its pioneering Evening Learning Center (ELC) for the transgender community on June 24, 2024, with support from Deutsche Bank. The ELC operates in Sion and Kanjurmarg and is the first of its kind in Mumbai, providing a safe and inclusive educational platform specifically for transgender individuals. The ELC’s goal is to offer them the opportunity to complete their Grade 10 education as private candidates, promoting self-reliance and enhancing their social standing.

Mumbai’s transgender community faces significant obstacles in accessing education due to social stigma and discrimination. Many have been forced out of school, which limits their future opportunities. Masoom’s evening classes offer a supportive and inclusive environment where these students can be themselves while pursuing their educational goals. Further, these afternoon and evening classes for students provide greater flexibility for individuals with daytime commitments. They are tailored to accommodate students’ schedules, which allows them to balance their education and livelihood.

As of now, 33 students have enrolled in the evening classes. Enrollment drives have been conducted in Sion, Kanjurmarg, and Wadala in Mumbai. The night school not only focuses on addressing the educational gap but also provides a platform for social engagement and personal growth. Through collaboration with NGOs and community stakeholders, Masoom is dedicated to promoting educational inclusivity and breaking the cycle of marginalization.

This ELC is a pilot initiative that aims to inspire similar projects in the future, creating a broader impact for transgender individuals and offering them the tools they need to thrive academically and socially.
